Design Proposal – Revitalization of the Summer Cinema on Locatelli Bastion, Olomouc. The core idea is to build on the long-standing tradition of summer refreshments. The goal is to awaken the entire area and create a vibrant place that is active throughout the day and all year round, accessible to the widest possible audience—across all ages and social groups.
The proposal aims to breathe new life into the historic summer cinema area on Locatelli Bastion through subtle yet meaningful interventions. These include clearing invasive vegetation, improving surfaces, partially renovating the amphitheater stage, introducing a new refreshment pavilion, and connecting the site to the park below the Cathedral via a new staircase. A central visual axis—already present—is emphasized to unify the space, stretching from the entrance on Pekární Street to the amphitheater.
The site is functionally divided into three zones: a quiet area near the entrance with shaded terraces and a community garden; a refreshment zone under mature trees, featuring a new pavilion, open seating, and a small stage for intimate performances; and the amphitheater zone, which retains its cultural role while being enhanced with new uses to activate the space during the day.
The quiet zone includes a new pedestrian path, flower beds, and a grid of poles for market canopies. A trimmed lawn and gravel path with benches offer space for relaxation, events, and informal sports. The refreshment area, shaded by large trees, becomes the social heart of the site, with a transparent pavilion, open counter, and fire pit. A children’s playground, table tennis, and a new staircase enhance accessibility and activity.
The amphitheater, a striking form within the baroque bastion, will be revitalized for cultural events while integrating new urban functions like a streetball court, skate area, and a renovated projection booth with a summer bar and potential guest apartment. Seating will be upgraded, and mobile toilets added for large events. A new stage canopy is envisioned to improve acoustics and preserve the site's unique silhouette.
At night, the area will be closed and softly illuminated with lamps and string lights, highlighting architectural and natural features. The overall goal is to transform the bastion into a vibrant, inclusive, and year-round public space that honors its history while inviting new life.
